When we launched the AI Household Assistant and MCP integration, the pitch was simple: ask questions about your household in plain English and get real answers from your actual data.
That was useful. But it was half of what it could be.
Today we're changing that. The AI assistant and MCP tools can now take action — not just read your data, but add to it. You can ask your assistant to add something to a todo list, create a calendar event, schedule a meal, create a chore, or mark a task as done. It acts on your request, confirms what it did, and you move on.
#What It Can Do Now
#Add Items to Your Todo Lists
"Add 'book the dentist' to the household to-do list"
"Can you add 'renew car insurance' to the admin list and mark it high priority?"
"Add three things to the shopping list: milk, bread, and washing up liquid"
You can ask it to add items to any existing list in your Circle, specify priority and due dates, and it'll confirm exactly what was added and where.
#Create Calendar Events
"Add a reminder on Friday at 2pm — take the bins out"
"Can you put Emma's school sports day on the calendar for the 24th? It's all day."
"Book in a family dinner for Saturday evening at 7pm and make it visible to everyone"
It creates the event on your household calendar, sets the visibility you ask for, and tells you what it created. Events show up straight away in the SimpliHome calendar and in any synced Google Calendar or Outlook.
#Add Meals to the Meal Plan
"Add pasta arrabiata to Tuesday's dinner"
"Put something quick on Monday for lunch — say, soup"
"Schedule chicken stir-fry for Friday dinner"
It looks at your current meal plan, finds the right day and meal time slot, and adds the meal. If you ask for a time slot that doesn't exist in your plan (e.g. "supper" when you only have Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner set up), it tells you what's available.
#Create Household Chores
"Add a new chore: clean the oven"
"Create a chore for hoovering upstairs"
New chores land in your chores list immediately. From there, you can assign them to household members and set up schedules from within the SimpliHome app.
#Mark Tasks as Complete
This is the one that changes daily flow the most.
"Mark 'take out the bins' as done"
"I've finished hoovering — can you tick it off?"
"The Monday cleaning chore is done"
The assistant checks what's pending, finds the right item, marks it complete, and confirms. No opening the app, no scrolling to find the right list, no tapping a checkbox — just say it and it's done.
This works for both todo items and chore schedule items.
#How It Works
#In the In-App Chat
Open SimpliHome, go to Chat, and start asking. The assistant now has tools for both reading and writing — it decides which ones to use based on what you're asking. If you ask a question, it reads and answers. If you ask it to do something, it acts.
For actions that require it to know which list or chore you mean, it may fetch your current data first to make sure it's acting on the right thing, then carry out the action.
#Via MCP in Claude Desktop (or Cursor)
If you've already connected SimpliHome to Claude Desktop or another MCP-compatible tool, your connection now includes write access automatically — no reconfiguration needed.
New MCP tools available:
| Tool | What it does |
|------|--------------|
| create_todo_item | Adds a task to a named todo list |
| complete_todo_item | Marks a todo task as done |
| create_calendar_event | Creates a calendar event |
| add_meal_to_plan | Adds a meal to the meal plan |
| create_chore | Creates a new household chore |
| complete_chore_item | Marks a scheduled chore as complete |
In Claude Desktop, you can now have conversations like this:
You: "I need to set up this week. Add a few things for me — pasta on Tuesday dinner, stir-fry on Thursday dinner, and put 'buy birthday card for Dad' on the to-do list."
Claude: "Done. I've added pasta to Tuesday's dinner slot, stir-fry to Thursday's dinner, and 'buy birthday card for Dad' to your to-do list. Anything else to sort out for the week?"
Or in the middle of a planning session:
You: "Can you also block out Saturday afternoon on the calendar for the kids' football? 2pm to 4pm."
Claude: "Added — 'Kids' football' is on Saturday 2pm–4pm, visible to everyone in the circle."
It can handle multiple actions in a single message and confirm everything it did.
#On WhatsApp
The write capabilities work through the WhatsApp integration too. Send a message like you normally would:
"Done the hoovering — can you tick off the chore?"
"Add eggs to the shopping list"
"Put a dentist appointment in the calendar for the 15th at 10am"
The assistant replies with confirmation of what it did.
#What It Won't Do
To keep things predictable and safe, the assistant can create and complete — but it won't edit or delete existing records. If you need to change a bill amount, edit an event's details, or remove something, you do that in the app. The AI acts as a fast way to add and tick off; it doesn't modify things that already exist.
#The Bigger Picture
The pattern here is what makes this genuinely useful rather than just a novelty.
Most household management apps have two modes: you're either in the app managing things, or you're away from it and just trying to remember what's there. The assistant collapses that into one thing: you stay in whatever you're doing — a conversation in Claude Desktop, a WhatsApp thread, a voice request through Siri — and the household gets updated in the background.
Finishing something while you're cooking. Adding something while you're at work. Scheduling meals while you're planning the week in a conversation. None of it requires you to context-switch into an app, find the right section, and tap through the interface.
It's still your SimpliHome data, stored the same way, visible to everyone in your Circle, synced to your calendars. The AI is just a faster way to get things in and out of it.
